Shape on the Brink

By Hiroko Hongyok

Hiroko Hongyok is no stranger to shapes. With inspirations from the likes of Georgia O’keeffe, her paintings are like a breath of fresh air. Her unique way of turning shapes into achingly beautiful pieces is beyond anything you will come across. She plays with the possibility of turning these shapes into “Almost” anything: Beautiful, eccentric, even grotesque. It all depends on the audience’s perspective.

She starts with a full canvas of paint and sketches then later works backwards as if erasing it with white paint till the shapes take form . Hers is a process that looks to transport an audience into a threshold of transformation, like the shapes in her paintings, they could transform into just about anything.

Like the name of the exhibition, these shapes morph into anything you want them to be.
